How often has fear stopped you dead in your tracks?
I think you know what I’m talking about…
That gripping, paralyzing fear which strips you of your senses and prevents you from taking that courageous step forward.
Many give in to their fears.
It’s easy to do.
I know.
I have done it.
It’s so easy to say, “Nah, never mind, I don’t really want to do that anyway… it must be the universe’s way of telling me I’m not supposed to do that…”
And so we shrug our shoulders and walk away.
Take flight.
We convince ourselves that we feel good about our decision.
When we do that though, we ultimately walk away from an opportunity. It may be an opportunity to learn, to grow, to teach, to connect, or in my case, to love on a very deep level.
Yin, our feisty frizzle rooster with the pointy, scary spurs and personality of a fierce lion, recently began to experience a problem with his right foot. He literally rules the roost and his brood of nine submissive hens adore him. They flock around him – no pun intended.
But me?
I shied away from him.
He sort of scared me – all that feistiness and two stepping.
Oh, we got along well enough – we just gave each other plenty of distance.
Concerned about his foot issue and knowing I didn’t have the courage to approach him and scoop him up to suss out the trouble (which I have done on numerous occasions with many hens who have lived out their very cushy lives with us over the past ten years) I called my neighbor Janet, who also has flocks of exotic hens and is very, if I do say so myself, gutsy.
She came right over, bent down and simply picked him up.
Just like that.
No pomp and circumstance.
Yin didn’t seem to mind.
(What? He’s somewhat passive? This ballsy, spur swinging rooster??)
Goodness gracious!
Just like that the dynamics changed. He settled into her hold, and I could sense him thinking “Ahhh, relief is on the way … and this isn’t too bad being in the arms of a human…”
Five weeks have passed since that encounter.
Yin has had surgery and has required a great deal of loving care. He has been picked up and held more times than either of us can count. He loves nestling on my lap; receiving nourishment along with Reiki treatments. As we drift into a Zen-like state of mind we blend into one another. We communicate with each other, without even speaking. He fills my heart with joy and adoration.
I am so in love with this little frizzle rooster.
Had I not become fearless, I would have missed out on an awesome opportunity to connect and bond with Yin, this incredible, loving creature, who remains very feisty and oh, so very fierce…
Next time you are struck by fear – you may want to pause for a moment and check in with your intuition.
Feel the love in the situation, flex your courage muscle and go for it.
I’d love to hear your Yin story.
Feel free to share with us.
It’s worth the leap of faith – trust me – there’s nothing quite as satisfying as being loved by a feisty rooster.
